Poems to See By

Subtitled A Comic Artist Interprets Great Poetry, this beautiful, inventive book pairs illustrations by the author with famous poems by a wide selection of writers, such as Robert Frost, Langston Hughes, Thomas Hardy, and Emily Dickinson–all the Literary Giants students are expected to know and (hopefully) appreciate by the time they exit high school. Recognizing the appeal of graphic texts to YA readers and noting the feedback given to him by teachers who have used his work in classes, he adapts “twenty-four great English-language poems of the last two centuries into the visual language of comics,” in order to help others better understand or clarify what they read. His visuals have varied styles and techniques, all of which are stunningly appropriate to the poems, but it is his discussion of the common elements of poetry and comics (in the Preface) that is most intriguing and thought-provoking.

This book would be useful in all kinds of settings and not just in a senior English class.  Be sure to add this to your collection.
